Bethania is located about 45 kilometres from Amman, near to the Jordan River. Many biblical heroes were present at this part of the Promised Land, amongst them Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Elijah, Elisha, John the Baptist and Jesus Christ himself. The Baptism Archaeological Park was founded on the eastern coast of the Jordan River

We can find the remains of a Roman-Byzantine settlement (Kastrun Mafaat) south of Madaba. In its centre we see a 14 metres high tower; its original function is unclear even today: maybe a guard-tower, an observation place or just a praying-location of the monks.
